Are Toys Making Your Child Sick?

The sight of a room cluttered with toys may make a mother sick, but dangers from the toys to an unsuspecting child are even more sickening.

Toy manufacturers, including Mattel, recently recalled more than 1 million Chinese-made toys because their paint contained excessive amounts of lead. That’s led anxious parents to rummage through toy chests to find tainted Elmo, Big Bird, Dora and Diego toys. They are phoning pediatricians for advice.

“We’ve received many phone calls regarding the recent lead toy scare,” said pediatrician David Schell, M.D. “Parents have found recalled toys in their homes and are concerned about their children’s exposure.”

Children who place lead-contaminated toys in their mouths or play with the toys and then place their hands in their mouths are at risk for poisoning.

Testing for lead poisoning is done in Western Baptist’s Laboratory through a basic blood draw.

Dr. Schell said that while lead-contaminated toys do pose a hazard, most cases of lead poisoning result from lead-filled environments, including homes with decaying, chipping paint.

Early symptoms of lead poisoning are almost nonexistent. With chronic, persistent exposure, however, severe central nervous system problems can result. “Children may suffer from seizures and learning disabilities,” said Dr. Schell.

Parents concerned that their children have been exposed to lead poisoning, either through toys or other sources, should consult their pediatrician.

“In most cases, removing a child from the lead-contaminated environment is the chief treatment,” said Dr. Schell.

If levels are considered toxic, children are given medication either at home or in the hospital, depending on the severity of their condition.
