Neurosurgeon Allan Gocio, M.D., uses the O-arm system at Western Baptist during some spinal surgeries.

Physicians at Western Baptist Hospital now have a better view of patients’ anatomy during spinal surgery with the O-arm® Multidimensional Imaging System, one of only eight such systems in the U.S. The imaging system shows realtime, 3-D images in about 30 seconds. “Time is critical in the operating room,” said neurosurgeon Allan Gocio, M.D.

Dr. Gocio said leading-edge technology like the O-arm recently attracted him to Western Baptist from southern Illinois.

Surgery patients benefit from the O-arm by experiencing less invasive surgeries, faster recovery times and improved outcomes.

Neurosurgeon Sean McDonald, M.D., said the O-arm system also offers promising future applications.

“The O-arm system will be useful in other specialties,” he said, “including operations for brain tumors and dynamic imaging of pre-op patients.”
