Obstetrician/gynecologist Blair Tolar, M.D., monitors the labor of Lindsay Sounders of Barlow.

Obstetrician/gynecologist Blair Tolar, M.D., knows that worries and pregnancy can go hand in hand, but many worries can be alleviated by following a few simple steps: exercising, eating correctly and keeping regular physician appointments.

“Early prenatal care is important,” said Dr. Tolar. “Even before you’re pregnant, make sure you’re in good physical shape. All women of childbearing age also should take 400 micrograms of folic acid each day to reduce birth defects of the brain and spinal cord.”

Good nutrition is important to both mother and baby. Dr. Tolar said a pregnancy takes about 300 extra calories a day to maintain, and an average-sized woman can expect to gain 25 to 35 pounds overall.

Exercise also is beneficial. A recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that exercise is usually safe during pregnancy, and that women who exercised vigorously were more likely to carry their babies to full term compared with women who exercised less or not at all. Dr. Tolar recommends that all pregnant women consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise program.

Avoiding cigarettes, alcohol and illegal and unnecessary medications also is vital. “It’s important to remember that the baby will encounter any substance a woman consumes while pregnant,” said Dr. Tolar. “Put your baby’s and your own health first by leading a healthy lifestyle.”
