Are You Prepared For An Emergency?

Know what to do.Knowing what constitutes an emergency, where to get help, and what to do while you’re waiting for help can save a life. Dr. John Myers, emergency physician in Western Baptist Hospital’s Trauma Center, discusses some tips from the American College of Emergency Physicians.

“First, remember that prevention remains the best cure,” says Dr. Myers. “Get routine medical and preventive care from a family doctor. Getting necessary immunizations and treating minor illnesses before they become serious can minimize visits to the Emergency Department.”

While it may seem negative to prepare for the worst, when an emergency does occur, Dr. Myers says prepared individuals are better able to handle it calmly, quickly, and effectively to minimize its impact.
Be prepared. Keep a list of emergency numbers by the phone. Additionally, make a list of all the medicines you and your family take and their dosages. A list of allergies, especially drug allergies and those with severe reactions, should also be readily available. This list will help ensure that the care you receive won’t make matters worse.

Keep a well-stocked first aid kit at home, at work, and in your car. A good first aid kit will help you handle medical situations effectively.

Take a first aid class. A basic class will teach CPR and how to initiate treatment for a variety of minor emergencies. First aid classes also will teach individuals whom to contact and when to seek help when an emergency occurs.

“Taking the appropriate steps to prevent an emergency is always better than waiting until after an emergency occurs,” says Dr. Myers. “The more knowledge both the patient and the first responder have, the better outcome for the patient.”
