Western Baptist Provides a Minimally Invasive Alternative for Atrial Fibrillation Patients

AlternativesRecently, Western Baptist Hospital introduced a permanent cure for atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common form of irregular heartbeat. The procedure is performed in the operating room in conjunction with coronary artery bypass or valve surgery. A recent improvement, however, allows cardiac surgeons at Western Baptist Hospital to offer a minimally invasive alternative to provide the procedure by itself.

For many atrial fibrillation patients, who do not require any other major heart surgery, a minimally invasive procedure can be performed through tiny incisions. Assisted by a tiny camera, a flexible catheter is placed on the beating heart to create small scars that break the cycle of atrial fibrillation. The patient may be discharged in as little as one day, and can typically resume an active lifestyle within a few days.

“This new option offers a quick, safe, and simple alternative to atrial fibrillation patients who, until now, could only receive such treatment in combination with another heart surgery,” explains Dr. James O’Rourke, heart and chest surgeon at Western Baptist Hospital. “This means less pain, shorter hospital stays, and a quicker recovery time,” he continues.

Atrial fibrillation can be very disabling, causing shortness of breath, lethargy, and palpitations. Additionally, the possibility of stroke is greatly increased, because blood does not move properly through the heart. A detailed discussion with your surgeon can help you understand the best option for your specific case.

This fall, Western Baptist Hospital will break ground on a new, 79,000-squarefoot Heart Center. The new center will be strategically located on the east side of the hospital, adjacent to the Emergency Room, and will house all invasive and noninvasive cardiac procedures.
