Sweet Dreams Are Made of This

More than 100 million Americans aren’t getting a good night’s sleep. If you’re one of them, Western Baptist Hospital’s Baptist Sleep Lab can help. Polysomnographer technologist Lisa Devine says that many people are not aware of the significance of getting adequate sleep. dreams

“When we do not get the proper sleep we need, our body does not function as it should,” says Devine. “Adequate sleep is a big part of our health and livelihood.”

The Baptist Sleep Lab was begun many years ago as part of the Neurodiagnostics department at Western Baptist. Three years ago, it became an independent department, employing a full-time night technician. Today, the Sleep Lab performs two studies per night.

Those undergoing sleep studies at the Baptist Sleep Lab enjoy comfortable, quiet, and relaxing private sleeping bedrooms featuring sophisticated equipment for monitoring sleep stages, breathing patterns, heart activity, blood oxygen levels, and body movements. Each bedroom has a comfortable, adjustable bed; cable television; shower; and restroom facilities all in the same area.

There are nearly 100 different known sleep disorders, each with different symptoms. “Many can be treated with the help of highly trained professionals,” says Devine. The most common of these disorders include snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, and periodic limb movement.

“Getting treatment can mean the difference between healthy, energetic living or being on medications and living in a haze,” Devine says.
