One of the most common problems that stops backpackers and hikers in their tracks is diarrhea. For a healthy hike, never drink lake or stream water without disinfecting it first. You can use tablets or filtering systems available at sporting-goods stores. Or simply boil the water. And always wash cookware and utensils—and hands, especially after going to the bathroom—with soap and water.

Stroke survivors often are inactive because of disability. But this increases their risk of suffering another stroke. In one study, stroke survivors worked out for 20 minutes three times a week. They rode stationary bikes that had pedals for both feet and hands. They also lifted weights. After 16 weeks, they were stronger, could do more, and had better overall health.
