Caring for the patient--mind, body and spirit

It’s long been said that the mind can have a powerful effect on the body, but cardiologist Patrick Withrow, M.D., believes a third element—the spirit—plays an important role, as well.

“More and more, research is showing a connection between one’s health and one’s spirituality,” said Withrow. “As caregivers, it’s important that we acknowledge this relationship and strive to meet patients’ spiritual needs in addition to their physical ailments.”

Withrow joins other Western Baptist physicians, clinicians and staff in the development of a new Clinical Clergy Conference (CCC).

James Wright, director of Pastoral Care at Western Baptist, said the CCC provides a networking opportunity for physicians and staff who want to be more in tune with their patients’ spiritual needs.

“Providing healing and comfort for patients is our main priority,” said Wright. “At Western Baptist, accomplishing this is truly a team effort.”

Recent research has shown that positive beliefs, comfort and strength gained from religion, meditation and prayer can contribute to healing and a sense of well-being.

“Improving your spiritual health may not cure an illness,” said Withrow, “but it may help you feel better, prevent some health problems and provide motivation and coping skills instrumental to improving health.”

Wright said incorporating spirituality into healthcare is a founding principle of Western Baptist Hospital.

“The mission of Western Baptist Hospital is to continue our Christian heritage of service and to enhance the health of the people and communities we serve,” said Wright. “Being diligent about not only the physical, but also the spiritual needs of our patients has been a long-standing tradition.”
