Cancer registrar picks nationally-winning theme

Donna SchmidtDonna Schmidt, Oncology Registry Coordinator at Western Baptist Hospital, was shaken when she learned her theme choice for National Cancer Registrars Week 2009 was selected as the national winner; her submission, however, was solid as a rock.

Schmidt submitted “Cancer Registrars…Rock Solid” for the National Cancer Registrars Association’s annual theme contest. Her entry was chosen among hundreds nationwide and will be used in promotional materials next year.

“I was completely shocked when I received notification I had won,” said Schmidt. “I’m very honored to represent Western Baptist in this capacity, and I think it reflects well on the dedicated team of cancer registrars at our hospital.”

Schmidt said her inspiration for the theme came from her own experience.

“Registrars remain rock solid in the face of an overwhelming number of changes in our profession,” said Schmidt. “And we are a steady foundation on which many agencies depend for accurate information in establishing best practice guidelines.”

Along with Schmidt, registrars Betty Copeland and Julie Welch compile data on the local incidence of cancer to submit for state and national research.
