The Birthing Center at Western Baptist Hospital

img-obstetrics Western Baptist's Birthing Center combines experienced and compassionate staff with modern maternity facilities.

We understand what new families want and need, because we've been sharing in the miracle of birth for more than 40 years. From the latest in equipment to the tender touch of caring nurses, we are committed to meeting the needs of women in western Kentucky.

Experienced, Compassionate Staff

From the time an expectant mother enters the Birthing Center until the time she and the new baby go home, the whole family can expect to receive care and education from a compassionate, professional staff. The Labor/Delivery Suite is staffed with obstetrical nurses who are knowledgeable and trained to monitor and support the laboring woman. The dedicated staff in both the newborn nursery area and the postpartum area are also specially trained and committed to providing high quality care to families, as well as encouragement and teaching.

Western Baptist Hospital also has certified lactation consultants on staff to provide instruction and support for women who choose to breastfeed.

Modern Maternity Facilities

Perinatal Diagnostic Services

Expectant mothers want to give their babies the very best possible start in life. For this reason, your doctor may recommend special tests to take a look at the growing life inside you.

Western Baptist Hospital offers American College of Radiology (ACR) certified ultrasound to help your doctor determine:
  • how far along you are in your pregnancy;
  • if you are going to have more than one baby;
  • if your baby has any major health problems and is growing properly; and
  • the position of the placenta, which can affect whether or not a vaginal delivery is safe.
We also offer amniocentesis, a simple procedure which withdraws amniotic fluid from around the growing fetus through a slender needle. Your doctor may recommend amniocentesis for many reasons, including:
  • if your baby is at risk for certain types of birth defects such as Down syndrome, spina bifida or anencephaly;
  • to determine if the baby's lungs are mature enough for delivery;
  • if he or she suspects you have an infection; or
  • if there is maternal blood sensitization (usually Rh sensitization) to make sure the baby is developing normally.

Antepartum Room

Located in our Labor & Delivery Suite, the antepartum room is used for special procedures ordered by the physician during pregnancy to check the health of both you and your baby.

Birthing Rooms

Western Baptist's Birthing Center is equipped with six, spacious, birthing rooms where you may labor, give birth and recover until you and your baby are ready to move to a private room in our Postpartum Area. Hardwood floors, cherry furniture and walls adorned with photos of babies born at the hospital lend a feeling of warmth to the area.

The Birthing Center is conveniently located on the second floor of Doctors Office Building 2, so OB/GYN offices are close by. A covered breezeway connects the parking garage directly to the second floor.

Postpartum Area

Our newly renovated postpartum area features all private rooms so you spend quiet time together as a family. Each is room is comfortably furnished with a telephone, television and private bath.

Newborn Nursery

Western Baptist Hospital uses the latest technology in providing care for infants and was the first hospital in Kentucky to provide hearing screenings for all newborns.

Level II Neonatal Intermediate Care Nursery

Our Level II Nursery is designed to care for babies born prematurely or those who need a little help adjusting to their new environment during the first few days of life. It is equipped to care for all but the most critically ill newborns. Those who need a higher level of care are transported on a special, fully-equipped aircraft to a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery such as Kosair-Children's Hospital in Louisville.

Infant Security System

For your protection, Western Baptist Hospital's Birthing Center is equipped with a special security system to safeguard newborns.

Brahm's Lullabye

In celebration of each new birth, Brahms Lullaby is played on the hospital's intercom system.
