Western Baptist offers free cancer support classes

Cancer affects more than just individuals; it affects entire families. That’s why Western Baptist Hospital is teaming with the American Cancer Society to offer “I Can Cope,” a free monthly support group, to provide the resources and support they need.

Western Baptist employees Marsha Penrod, R.N., certified oncology nurse and cancer survivor, and Heather Mathis, ultrasound technologist, co-lead the class. Speakers include physicians, nurses, dietitians and others, on topics, such as:

  • Diagnosis and treatment
  • Side effects of treatment
  • Emotions and self-esteem
  • Cancer and intimacy
  • Communication skills
  • Community resources
  • Financial concerns
  • Pain management
  • Nutrition
  • Fatigue

The first class will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 9, in the Baptist Heart Center Conference Room, with Western Baptist oncologists James Gould, M.D., and Charles Winkler, M.D., presenting “Learning about Cancer.”

Classes will continue on the second Thursday of each month at the same time and location.

The class is free, but reservations are required by phoning the American Cancer Society at (270) 444-0384 or 1-800-227-2345.
