Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp set for Sept. 23-25
The area’s first Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp for stroke survivors and caregivers will be Sept. 23-25 at Lake Barkley State Resort Park in Cadiz.
The camp, sponsored by Western Baptist and Lourdes hospitals and Medtronic, will provide a weekend retreat for people who have had a stroke, as well as their caregivers and families.
“In a safe and nurturing environment, survivors and caregivers will have an opportunity to speak with others like themselves about challenges, triumphs and solutions,” said Larry Schaer, associate camp director.
Activities include educational programs, as well as typical camping experiences, such as campfires, fishing, games and crafts.
“We want to encourage stroke survivors and caregivers to sign up for this wonderful event,” said Mary Legge, R.N., Western Baptist’s stroke team leader. “Stroke camps have been held across the country since 2004, and participants can’t wait to attend year after year.”
Ashley Britton, program director for the Lourdes Otto J. Diller Rehabilitation Center, said support from family and friends is critical for optimal stroke recovery. “This stroke camp will allow survivors and their caregivers to create new and valued relationships with other families and camp participants,” Britton said.
Stroke is the nation’s third leading killer and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes.
“Strokes are a common consequence of cardiovascular disease and can lead to serious residual effects,” said internal medicine physician Jesse Wallace, M.D., a camp volunteer. “This stroke camp will definitely help stroke survivors and their caregivers improve their quality of life and understanding of their care.”
Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp is a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life for stroke survivors and their caregivers. For more information or to register, contact Schaer at lschaer@sbcglobal.net or toll-free at (866) 688-5450.
