Emergency department physician receives UK Award

Western Baptist Hospital Emergency department physician Brian Hawkins, M.D., recently received the Community Preceptor award from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.

Dr. Hawkins is one of two physicians recognized from the 1,200 providing clinical instruction to the school’s third- and fourth-year medical students. Feedback from medical student evaluations and the number of students served are factors in selection of the annual award winners.

“Dr. Hawkins’ dedication to providing quality care and teaching the next generation of health care providers makes him an excellent role model to the students he serves,” said Larry Barton, president and CEO of Western Baptist.

Clinical rotations are part of all Kentucky medical schools’ curriculum. They are coordinated locally through the Purchase Area Health Education Center (AHEC) at Murray State University.

“I enjoy working with the students and participating in their education, as well as letting them see what it is like to participate in a community emergency medicine environment,” Dr. Hawkins said. “Having students helps me to stay up-to-date and keeps me motivated to learn.”
