Childbirth Fair set for Sept. 14

Parents-to-be can learn about Mother and Baby Care, the NICU and other maternity services at the annual free Childbirth Fair at Baptist Health Paducah from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept.14, in the atrium of Doctor’s Office Building 2.

Mother and Baby Care is a new initiative, allowing the family to keep their newborn in their private room.

“Mother and Baby Care is a change of mindset that we serve the mother best by teaching her the skills and giving her the confidence she’ll need to take care of her baby once she goes home,” said Tawni Price, R.N., Mother and Baby director.

She said the initiative features the same nurse caring for both mother and newborn, including educating mothers in how to care for newborns. “Evidence shows infants cry less in their mother’s presence, have lower blood pressure and have more stable temperatures, pulse and respirations,” Price said.

The fair also features information about the region’s only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for newborns who need special care, as well as tours of the labor and delivery suites.

Expectant parents can register for the hospital’s free maternity program, StorkCentral, which includes:

  • A free copy of the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy.
  • An invitation to StorkSmart, an educational program with hospital staff, and free classes.
  • Access to StorkCentral’s Baby Steps, an online pregnancy information center, and the Stork’s Nest, the hospital’s online photo nursery.

Vendors provide giveaways and door prizes. Phone 270.575.BABY (2229) for more information.
